We're all about seeking out new adventures, and the Schafberg Railway in Austria is a perfect choice for anyone looking to combine history, stunning views, and a unique travel experience.

Operating since 1893, this vintage cogwheel steam train once carried miners but now transports tourists from St. Wolfgang up to Schafberg Mountain, 1,783 meters above sea level.

The steep 26-degree incline makes the ride an exciting experience as you climb through gorgeous alpine scenery, eventually reaching one of the most panoramic viewpoints in Austria.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Schafberg is from May to October, when the weather is warmer and clearer. If you visit in winter, be prepared for cold temperatures and possibly snowy conditions. For fewer crowds, try visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

Getting There

We took the bus from Salzburg. From Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (Main Station), Bus 150 brought us to Strobl Busbahnhof, where we switched to Bus 546 to reach St. Wolfgang Schafbergbf. The bus fare was about $11 each way.

Other routes are available depending on where you're staying in Austria, but be sure to plan for the most efficient travel option.

Ticket Prices and Timings

The round-trip ticket costs around $39, which may feel a little steep, but it's well worth the price. The train operates from 9:20 AM to 4:30 PM, departing every hour. We recommend arriving early, especially during peak tourist seasons, to avoid long queues.

What to Do at the Summit

Once you reach the top, the views are breathtaking! You can see the entire St. Wolfgang Lake and the surrounding mountains. It's the perfect place to take photos and enjoy the peace of nature. Don't forget to head inside to reserve your return ticket as seats are limited.

If you're hungry, the summit has a restaurant, Haus Schafbergspitze, but it's a bit pricey. We recommend bringing your snacks if you prefer to save money.

Travel Tips

1.Dress Appropriately: Even in summer, it can be chilly on top, so bring a warm jacket and hat.

2.Sun Protection: The sun can be intense at higher altitudes, so pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

3.Book in Advance: If you're visiting in peak season, booking your tickets early is essential.

4.Bring Snacks: The restaurant is costly, so bringing some snacks and water might be a good idea.

5.Enjoy the Ride: Make sure to sit on the left side when going up and the right side when coming down for the best views.

Is It Worth It?

Despite the high ticket price, the experience of riding the historic steam train and soaking in the spectacular views makes it well worth it. We highly recommend this experience if you're in Salzburg. It's a unique, once-in-a-lifetime journey that combines history, natural beauty, and unforgettable views.
